I found a journal
washed up on the beach
it was stained brown with silt
and the pages were brittle
the script had faded under the elements
but still stood out
defiant like an old survivor of a genocide
who refuses to let the young forget
what their grandfathers did to him
with the surf ringing in my ears
and the salty air in my lungs
I read the yellow paper
it read
" I am the sum of the dreams of conquered people
yearning for the day when the sun light
is not obscured by the boot heel of their tormentors
my god is small and when I die, she will die with me
because I am the last that knows her real name.
she comes to me in the night
and I sing to her in the old way.
her arms are in the wind and they caress my face
with loving approval.
this lesser god is all that remains of a people, my people,
who once stood here, stranger. These words are my attempt to
avoid obscurity. You will never know my name, or who we were
but read this and know, I lived and felt and all that remains of me
are these thoughts scribbled on scraps of paper"
